The MADE Market Spiral Staircase project proudly took out the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Award – Under $500K category. PFS was engaged by the client to provide critical design input, helping to overcome key engineering challenges that pushed the boundaries of what steel can achieve.
The MADE Market Spiral Stairway is a standout architectural feature that seamlessly links the level 3 dining deck with The Sheds—a vibrant hub of creativity housing art studios, a coffee roastery, and a boutique restaurant.
Its design is both bold and refined, featuring a gracefully curved façade that tapers into a central column, reminiscent of fluted glass. This sculptural form delivers striking visual impact while complementing the eclectic character of its surroundings, enriching the visitor experience and reinforcing the dynamic energy of the space.

The project faced compressed timeline due to an ambitious opening date and building consent times. To address this the PFS ordered all the steel components cut to size and pre folded where feasible. This approach coupled with a second shift welding, accelerated the construction process to help meet the projects tight schedule.
The central column of the stairway serves as the primary structural support, not only for the stairway itself but also for the deck above. This strategic design choice allowed for the use of lighter steel materials for the stairway and façade, resulting in a more efficient use of resources while maintaining the structural integrity of the entire assembly.
